Chassis and drive systems are responsible for the base of the robot and all the basic systems. We work closely with other teams such as manipulator, electronics, and CAD, managing the space for the robot We are also responsible for constructing the chassis. The chassis is the platform for all components that will be on the robot. Without a chassis, there is no robot.
New members start out by learning how to use all the tools in our shop. Veterans advise them through the design and build process. We also let new members make mistakes for themselves by experimenting (under the supervision of a veteran) on the old robot. At the beginning of build season, when the entire team breaks into the different sub-teams, the Chassis Team observes and compares the different kinds of frames, and the different kinds of wheels, and then we mix and compare frames and wheels to decide which pair we should use. After we decide on a final design, and the CAD team has finalized the design to ensure there are no mechanical errors, we begin to buy our parts and assemble the chassis.
Tips for Rookies: Have a thorough plan before starting any project. The plan needs to have a clear idea of where you are going and how you are going to get there. Also, be sure to communicate your ideas to the rest of the sub-team to ensure that they are on the same page as you. Don’t be afraid to put your ideas out there. Any contribution can lead to a new concept that can advance the design of the robot.
